Who Is Elijah?
Hebrew prophet Elijah, also known by the spellings Elias and Elia, Hebrew Eliyyahu (who lived in the 9th century BCE) ranks alongside Moses in preventing Yahweh’s religion from being perverted by Baal worship. The name Elijah, which translates as “Yahweh is my God,” is also known as Elias in various Bible translations.
In the Bible, 1 Kings 17–19 and 2 Kings 1–2 tell the account of his prophetic career under the reigns of Ahab and Ahaziah. This may have been an extraordinary focus on monotheism for Elijah, who asserted that there was no other reality than God’s. On the 20th of July, Christians remember him as a martyr, while Muslims revere him as a prophet.
The Bible tells us very little about Elijah’s personal history. We know he belonged to the tribe of Issachar, but we do not know where or when he was born. He was probably raised in the territory of Manasseh and Ephraim, since both tribes were located west of Zarethan and east of Sidon in Israel.
Some believe that he was a shepherd before becoming a prophet. However, the Bible says nothing about his profession, nor does it say how old he was at the time of his call to prophesy. In fact, some scholars do not believe that he existed.
Elijah’s family left Bethlehem during his childhood and settled in Beeroth (a town near Moab), though they later returned to Jerusalem. His father’s name was Hiel, and his mother’s name was Abishag. Some versions of the Bible claim that his father died and was buried in Beersheba, but elsewhere this story has been questioned.
Elijah was married to a woman named Zibeah, and together the couple had four children. According to the Bible, he had two sons, one daughter, and three wives.
